John Vance was a 1975 graduate of Coldwater High School. As a CHS student, he was involved in the newly-formed Student Commission (our current Student Council), Yearbook staff, and C-Club; he also played varsity football and baseball. As a senior, he was selected Homecoming King by the student body. He went on to attend the University of Michigan, where he played on the reserve baseball team in 1976. He represented the highest standards of character, leadership, and achievement to which all students should aspire. He was not just an athlete, nor an honor student, nor a student leader; he was all of these. On May 25, 1982, John lost a year-long battle with cancer. In memory of John Vance, and in an effort to recognize a graduating senior who best represents the high standards that John exemplified, the John Vance Award was established in 1982. Every year, the faculty and staff of CHS selects one senior to receive this honor. That person's name is added to a plaque displayed in the gym lobby next to the CHS Athletic Hall Of Fame.
